Traditional photography roadblocks:

It is an undeniable fact that digital technology has vastly improved photography. However, most digital cameras only allow you to shoot. Image editing needs separate investment in software. The digital camera by them can get quite costly and if one is thinking about a digital SLR, it is a serious investment in terms of lenses, flash, batteries, storage media and associated equipment. Traditional photography can also get intimidating with its technical aspects and lead to the loss of spontaneity in the photographer. This means that just having the passion to shoot does not promise good images – an in depth knowledge of the medium is also necessary.

I-Phoneography scores:

It is here that the iPhone has brought in a refreshing change. The camera it has comes as a feature of the phone which means great value for money. Straightaway, the iPhone camera brings with it 5 powerful advantages:
1. It can capture an image instantly without much planning. Thus, it is a blessing to shoot those ‘historic’ moments. It is easy to use.
2. The huge app store ensures that there is no dearth of tools to create any effect that you wish to in your pictures.
3. Showcasing your talent through your pictures is only a button away as the phone integrates you with the world wide web.
4. Storage and classification of the data is made easy and efficient through applications like iPhoto.
5. Similar work done by others can be accessed and used as learning guides.
The greatest benefit of i-Phoneography is the real time global documentation that it makes possible and a very economical cost. This has encouraged almost everyone to develop the photographer that sits within him/her.

The road ahead:

It definitely cannot be said that i-Phoneography will replace digital cameras. Phone camera have a long way to go before reaching the quality of SLR cameras and till then, the professionals and serious enthusiasts will swear only by the digital cameras. However, a large majority may find the iPhone camera as an excellent substitute to the costly cameras.

The fact that i-Phoneography is rapidly gaining ground is proven by the University course that has been started at Kensington and Chelsea College, London, which specializes in training students into the nuances and tricks of iPhone photography. The course only requires investment in an iPhone and about $20 of apps. While photography as an art will only be supplemented and complemented by i-Phoneography, photography as a science will definitely be challenged by it!
